I just had to replace the Muffler on my I35, but the day it broke it sounded fantastic, and raspy. I almost didn't want to replace it.

I probably will weld a straight pipe in or something cheap, since its more than just the muffler.

How good is it at a DD?

Reliable?

Ehhhh, since I live in NYC, I don't really have to rely on it to get to school every day, because if I did parking would be bad.

I haven't had any major issues with my car yet, just minor things dying. This, my gauges, eh. Otherwise pretty fun and solid.

Yeah, I don't even want to talk about how many tickets I have gotten and haven't paid for, for my nonexistent inspection sticker.

What year is it?

Also, side note: If you fail inspection and it's emissions related and will cost over $400 to fix, you can get a one year exemption from NYS. At least this was still the case a couple of years ago. Look into it.

You're past the actual smog test anyway. It's just a visual at this point. In other words, they won't TEST your emissions components, but they will check just to make sure they are in place.

Balls, late car. If the early parts will work, I wonder if I still have the old exhaust bits from the original Porschelump?

a couple of months ago my Lexus GS350 has gotten a lot louder and my dad asked me whys it so loud. I didnt really care cause i though it was too quiet LOL. after going through the dealership for the recall on the headers, we suggested a few problems like the brakes having to be pressed all the way down and hte louder exhaust. When we got the car back they told us the brakes were rear brakes where seized. I'm guessing they don't work anymore? anyways the mid pipe/Y pipe is rusted there was a leak. this was all confirmed by the dealership. Not sure on how to fix the brake problem but the rear brake pads seem to be fine. My automotive family friends tell me I probably just need to change the brake fluid. Anybody got anything in mind to help?

Anything more specific?

There's usually two ways anything caliper related can be 'siezed'.

1. Piston is siezed in the bore. Rear brakes don't work with a shit. Excessive pedal might be from frts needing more 'use' or pressure to stop. Unlikely. Because a delaership would've recommended vehicle unsafe to drive. More likely;

2. Slider pins siezed. Pins are what the caliper floats on. They allow the caliper to move around slightly, thereby keeping both brake pads as near the surface of the rotor as possible, keeping the distance the pad has to move to create friction very low.

What may be happening, if one or both slider pins have quit allowing caliper movement , when the brakes are applied you have the piston from the caliper moving, the caliper/pin/knuckle assembly flexing just a little allowing one pad (or both) to contact, but when you release the brake, the flex returns everything to where it was which may be pushing the piston back into the caliper. When this happens, there is excessive gap between that side pad and the rotor, and this causes excessive pedal (and piston) movement the next time you have to push fluid down there to move the piston/pad.

The cure? Depending on the severity of the corrosion, a good tech with some time may be able to lossen everything up. Otherwise, caliper and knuckle replacement may be in order. High end dealers like to replace parts, because they think you are loaded. Find a good asian independent. And talk to them nicely.

Yup thanks!

I'm just thinking, if the brakes seized, wouldn't the wheels be dragging?

I'm sorry. Might be just slider pin and/or knuckle replacement. depends on how/if it comes apart. Either way, they're gonna try to sell ya some parts and labor.

If the rear pistons are seized (for a while, lets say his parents were using the car or the previous owner thought it was an 's-class') the rears may not be doing much at all, depending on the climate (where he lives) If the dude is a pussy, and doesn't really use the brakes, the frts may be doing all the work, with the rears doing nothing. Now, a couple real panic stops would tell me loads. Because if the car doesn't move then? Bingo.

Dammit, Mr. Brown. Kinja is really screwing me up without an edit. You are correct, most caliper piston siezures are locked on. From an errant panic stop. Then caliper drag. Then game over.

What I do is stop a few times, then drive for 5 miles, then ck temp at the hub of each wheel. The warmest will tell you the sticky corner.

Not sure if kinja is messed up so i can't discuss on your topic Zoom. Its going to snow tomorrow so I will have to check some other time. I think the topic of when one brake pad doesnt work might be true, the other half of the story was that i did bring it to my dads friends mechanic shop and they say one side is done. on the report it says one is 60mm and the other 10mm wasnt sure if it was speaking for the same side. If anything i'll have to flush the brake fluids anyway cause it probably has been done in a year or more.

Slider pins, bud. Lack of rear brake action to the rears for a while. If you can get the rear pins to free up without damaging either the knuckle or caliper, toss pads on it and monitor it for 6 months.

Good luck.

Thanks for the luck! Hmm maybe it is the slider pin, I'm no mechanic. the most I've ever done was probably oil change, rotating tires, and swapping filters. I have a feeling where its more on the cylinder that pushes the brake pads. Will try to do it as soon as possible. College starts soon so I'm going to be pretty busy.

Cool. Normally seized rear pistons will seize 'applied' (with the piston out and not returning) of some sort. So brake hard a few times, then roll each rear wheel seperately and compare drag side to side. If one or both are very hard to turn, you have seized piston to caliper. If they dragging slightly, probably slider pins.

so i leave the E brake off and put the car on jack stands right? BTW it's an AWD lexus so yea not sure if it'll spin when i turn it.

Kinja'd!!! Zoom > spadez

Yes. Brake hard 5 times or so first. And you can tell a dragging caliper immediately. Before any slack is taken up in the driveline. ie If the wheel won't budge, its not the driveline keeping it from moving.

Again, if it does move, chances are the seizing they were talking about is more likely caliper slider pins.

That really sounded mild compared to my everyday driver, a 1966 Chevelle, V8 283 c.i. with dual glasspacks. Going through a tunnel with that thing is a wonderful experience. Panties melt at the sound of its throbbing idle.
